The title The Fox Petition was inspired partly by a petition protesting a new government ban on vaccinated foxes kept as pets, and party by the Whig politician, Charles James Fox, the Leader of His Majesty's Opposition. In this collection, anything seen as in opposition, anything other or alien, is at one, whether it is a species, a refugee, or a bright fox standing otherworldy and intact on a night-road: 'this is about more: the truly biosecure: all mercies now interdependent as species.'
